《法國國家圖書館明清天主教文獻》所收的各種重製刊本和稿本大致可稱為「中國天主教文獻」，亦即由中國和歐洲人因十七世紀中ー歐交流所產出的文本。（但並非所有文本都屬於嚴格意義下的宗教與天主教）。

選擇標準約有下列幾項：文本的獨特性、內容多寡（例如湯瑪斯‧阿奎那《神學大全》的中譯本《超性學要》便會佔去太多的空間）以及它們是否已在其它地方被部分複製。本集所收約190種文獻，均按主題安排，雖然因書本的格式不同，分類的一致性並未完全達成。它們反映十七、八世紀中國出版西方科學與宗教書籍的特點，也見證法國國家圖書館藏品的豐富。

本集收錄的主題範圍甚廣：如文藝復興的科學與哲學、人文主義的著作、地圖和地理學、教士和信徒的傳記、辯教作品、奏摺與詔書。其中至少有七冊特別關注與中國教徒相關的著作。法國國家圖書館也有豐富的神學和靈修作品、禮拜書和祈禱書；也有關於「符象論」（figurism 一種調適神學）的好藏品，本集便有一冊屬於此一主題。

 

In line with earlier collections, the present facsimile collection reproduces printed and manuscript texts under the general title Chinese Christian Texts, i.e. texts produced by Chinese and Europeans as a result of the early contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth century (not all texts deal with religion and Christianity in the strict sense).

Several criteria guided the selection: the uniqueness of the available texts, their extent (for example, the Chinese translation of Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae, Chaoxing xueyao, would cover too much space), and the fact whether they have already been partially reproduced elsewhere. The approximately 190 texts included in Chinese Christian Texts from the National Library of France have been arranged by subject, though consistency was not always possible due to the different formats of the volumes. They reflect the characteristics of Chinese publications on Western science and religion in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and at the same time testify to the richness of the Chinese collection at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

These publications cover a wide range of subjects such as Renaissance science and philosophy, humanistic writings, cartography and geography, biographies of missionaries and converts, apologetic writings, memorials and edicts. At least seven volumes give particular attention to the writings of Chinese converts. The Bibliothèque nationale de France is also rich in theological and spiritual works, as well as liturgical and prayer books. It also has a good collection of books on figurism (accommodation theology), to which we devote one whole volume.
